On 2nd February 2026, two new Freemen were officially inducted during the Candlemas Guild Day ceremony. The honourees, Dave Cummings and Peter Carr, were sworn in amidst celebrations recognizing their contributions and dedication.

Dave Cummings
Dave is married to Monica and resides in Brandon. He completed his apprenticeship with Mechanical Engineering Services, a local plumbing and heating company in Bearpark. After five years, he joined Durham City Council and has since retired. Dave has long been aware of the Durham City Freemen and maintains connections with several Freemen from his council days, including Bryan Proud, Mac Williams, David Howard, and Neil Graham.
Outside of his professional life, Dave enjoys flying radio-controlled model aeroplanes and broadcasting radio shows focused on Northern and rare soul music across three community stations: BishopFM, Love Soul Radio London, and G Town Radio. He is also a collector of rare soul records and a retired professional magician.
Peter Carr
Peter, married with two grown children, Liam and Caitlin, was born in the old terrace houses at the bottom of Brandon. He began his apprenticeship at 15 with Brandon and Byshottles Council during a housing redevelopment program. After completing his apprenticeship as a bricklayer, Peter worked extensively across the North East, including for Leech Homes and Persimmon Homes, accumulating 51 years of service before retiring at 66.
In retirement, Peter enjoys golf, walking, gardening, and spending time with his grand-children.
The Candlemas Guild Day ceremony highlighted the valued traditions and community spirit upheld by the Freemen, welcoming Dave and Peter into this esteemed group.
