Celebrating Excellence in Craft and Trade

The Durham City Freemen have long championed the pursuit of excellence among those practising a wide range of trades within the city. Traditionally, Freemen assessed apprentices’ final pieces—crafted works that demonstrated the skills and knowledge acquired during training. These finishing pieces were used to judge whether an apprentice had reached the high standards required to be considered a true craftsman.

In today’s training environment, apprentices are assessed in a different way. Through continuous evaluation and technical qualifications, they demonstrate their readiness via a formal end-point assessment. Although modern in structure, this still echoes the original purpose: to confirm an individual’s skill, learning, and growth in their chosen field.

The Birth of the Award Scheme

In 2021, the Durham City Freemen began shaping an Apprentice Award Scheme to recognise those apprentices—living, working, or training within the city—who showed exceptional talent and dedication.

A small team of Freemen developed the programme, explored funding options, created a selection process, and identified key trade categories. Their efforts, along with the support of the Wardens and Deputies, resulted in the inaugural awards ceremony held at the Town Hall on 27 March 2023. Thirteen apprentices received engraved glass trophies, signed certificates, and £50 Amazon vouchers, presented by the Lord Lieutenant.

Building on Success

The 2024 awards saw nine winners chosen from twenty-five nominees, submitted by organisations such as New College Durham, Durham University, Durham Cathedral, and local businesses. Nominees represented a diverse educational range—from first-year apprentices to those completing degree-level apprenticeships.

Looking Ahead

The Freemen’s ambition is to continue developing the scheme, broadening its reach to include a wider array of trades and backgrounds. They are also exploring ways to highlight and celebrate businesses that go above and beyond in their support of apprentices.
